Marriage, Family and Individual Counseling

Marriage Counseling
Couples are often caught in a never-ending cycle of repeating the same arguments, conflicts and unhealthy patterns of interaction with no resolution in sight. Couples Counseling can help. Teresa has a doctorate in Marriage and Family Counseling, is a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), and has worked with couples for 30 years. When couples come in for counseling, they learn to communicate more effectively with each other. They can also look at what they each bring into the marriage from the family they grew up in that may be influencing their relationship with each other now. Specific issues can be addressed such as parenting, finances, step-family issues and infidelity. Partners typically come into the counseling sessions together, although individual sessions can be scheduled when requested. Couples practice new ways of relating to each other during sessions and when they are at home between sessions. Questions of whether partners truly want to remain together can be explored, as well as ways to make relationships stronger, happier and more loving. Marriage Counseling can help couple to create the kind of marriage that couples have always hoped for.

Family Counseling
Family Counseling is often helpful when there is a child or an adolescent who is having a problem. Family Counseling can include any combination of family members being present during a session. A child can be seen alone and at other times with one or both parents. The entire family can be seen together and parents can work together on parenting issues. Seeing an individual in the context of the family can be a powerful way of achieving relief from symptoms. Step Family work can also be achieved with Family Counseling. Teresa’s has a doctorate in Marriage and Family Counseling, is a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), and has been providing Family Counseling for 30 years.

Family Counseling can help with a wide variety of problems including children’s behavior problems, depression, anxiety, addiction, eating disorders and a range of other problems. Since the individual with the symptoms is imbedded in a family system, working with the entire family can be a highly effective means of relieving symptoms and resolving problems

Individual Counseling

Individual Counseling can be helpful for a wide variety of Psychological Problems including depression, anxiety, alcoholism and other addictions, eating disorders, traumatic life events and PTSD as well as for life events such as divorce, death in the family, career transitions, and changes in life circumstances. In addition to psychotherapy, Dr. Paine teaches meditation techniques and helps clients make needed lifestyle changes such as establishing healthy eating and exercise routines. Spiritual issues can also be addressed. Dr. Paine has been trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), an effective technique for resolving trauma and EFT, in which clients are taught a technique to use at home to ease psychological and physical symptoms. This technique uses tapping on acupuncture points and is often highly effective.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is a form of psychotherapy that was developed by a psychologist who was working with Vietnam War veterans who had Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from being exposed to disturbing combat experiences. This technique is now used for the after-effects of a range of distressing life events such as a car accident, an assault, marital infidelity  or seemingly less upsetting life circumstances that can cause emotional emotional and psychological distress. EMDR is based on the way in which memories of disturbing events are stored in the brain. Normally, negative events are “processed” by the brain but when a situation is extremely disturbing it may not be processed, but stored in such a way that it can create continuing anxiety, depression and other symptoms. In some cases the memory is so clear that it can be experienced as a “flashback.” With EMDR the memory can be processed by a technique that involves the use of relaxation techniques, rapid eye-movement while remembering the event. The client is also able to associate positive thoughts and feelings with the situation so that the event is no longer disturbing. This results in a neutralizing of the traumatic event so that the psychological symptoms are no longer a problem. This technique has been thoroughly researched and is accepted by the US Defense Department, the American Psychiatric Association and the Departments of Health of other countries as being an important means of resolving PTSD and the emotional fallout from disturbing life events.

Emotional Freedom Technique
This is a technique that clients can learn in psychotherapy sessions and then practice at home. It makes use of tapping on acupuncture points that the clients does to him/herself. The underlying theory behind EFT comes from ancient Chinese medicine and acupuncture and involves energy pathways that run through the body. These energy pathways can be blocked by traumatic events and emotional issues. EFT allows these blocks to be cleared so that healing can take place. This is a tool that can be learned in counseling sessions and then used whenever symptoms arise. It can also be used for enhancing well-being and peak performance training.
